Suwon parades to celebrate World Cup

As part of the opening ceremonies for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, several parades are to take place in Suwon on 1 June from 18:00 - 20:00.

A parade featuring traditional folk music and dance of the 32 countries represented at the 2002 FIFA World Cup will start at Suwon High School and end at Yunmudae, situated one block from the Suwon World Cup Stadium.

A re-enactment of the royal procession of King Jungjo, the 22nd king of the Chosun Dynasty, will also be part of the festivities. The original trek, which was made over two hundred years ago, was King Jungjo¡¯s homage to the tomb of his father.

A 'Water and Fire' parade will also be part of the opening festivities. The parade will begin at Hwa-hong Gate, which symbolizes water in Korean tradition, and will progress towards Jang-An Park, representing fire.

The focus of these parades is to introduce Korean culture to the world and to bring the cultures of world together in one setting.
