Third Place Finish
The Korea Republic-Turkey match will be the third time that a host team have played in the third place match. The Koreans will be hoping that history repeats itself as the host nations won each of the previous third place matches: Chile defeated Yugoslavia 1-0 in 1962 and Italy overcame England 2-1 in 1990.
European Representation
In every third place match in FIFA World Cup history, there have been at least one European participant. The only exceptions were in the 1930 tournament when there was no third place match and in 1950 when there was a final group stage to determine the winner. Korea Republic are the first non-European squad to play in the third place match since 1978 when Brazil defeated Italy 2-1.
Top Four Finish Again
Korean head coach Guus HIDDINK (KOR) guided the Netherlands to the third place match in the 1998 FIFA World Cup where his team fell to Croatia 2-1.
Extra Time
Only in 1986 did the third place match go to extra time in order to decide the victor. After 90 minutes, France and Belgium were tied 2-2, but in extra time the French put the game away with goals from Bernard GENGHINI and Manuel AMOROS (FRA) for the 4-2 victory.
Most Frequent Result
Four different FIFA World Cup third place matches have ended with a score of 2-1. It occurred in 1966 with the Portugal-USSR match, in 1978 with the Brazil-Italy match, in 1990 with the Italy-England match and again in 1998 with the Croatia-Netherlands match.
Average Goals
FIFA World Cup third place matches have had an average of 3.85 goals scored per game. The third place match with the most goals scored was in 1958 when France defeated Germany FR by a score of 6-3.
