Located in the heart of the country, Daejeon is a gateway to three

Located in the vicinity of Daejeon are Gongju and Buyeo, ancient
capitals of the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.-A.D. 660), which possess

Daedeok
Valley
Comparable to Silicon Valley in California and Tsukuba in Japan,
Daedeok Valley in Daejeon is the cradle of the nation's state-of-the-art
science and technology. Daedeok Valley houses Expo Science Park,
the National Science Museum, Currency Museum and KAIST (Korea Advanced
Institute of Science and Technology), demonstrating that Daejeon
is the mecca of the nation's science education and research.
Expo Science Park
The park was built as a science theme park on a site of some 56
hectares for the 1993 Daejeon Expo. Since then, it has served as
a recreational area for the citizens. The park features Hanbit Tower
and exhibition halls with interesting themes..
Yuseong Hot Springs
A famous attraction not to be missed by tourists visiting Daejeon.
Major minerals contained in the hot water originating 200 m down
the surface include calcium, potassium, sulfate, carbonic acid,
silicic acid and bicarbonate. These hot springs are known to be
effective in treating skin diseases and neuralgia. Since it was
designated as the first 'special Tourist District'sin the country
in August 1994, the area has evolved into one of the nation's best
hot springs resort, offering 100 accommodation facilities including
12 tourist hotels.

Gongju
National Museum
As one of the favorite tourist attractions in Gongju, the museum
displays treasures excavated from Munyeongwangneung, a royal
tomb from the 6th century. Although a majority of tombs of the
Baekje period were plundered, Munyeongwangneung had been perfectly
preserved intact until 1971 when it was discovered.

Buyeo
National Museum
Buyeo also houses a national museum featuring the unique architectural
style of the Baekje Kingdom. Numerous cultural assets here are sure
to provide visitors a wide assortment of things to see and learn.

Science Museum
The museum serves as a sanctuary of science and technology culture
where visitors enhance their interest and creativity with science
and technology. They can view and experience diverse science-related
exhibition halls, equipments and appliances, most notably a dome-shaped
23m celestial sphere hall.
Currency
Museum
This museum is a Korean-style stone building with a unique shape
and impressive architectural features. The museum features currencies
from all around the world from ancient times to the present. Visitors
can view Korea's history of minting currency through multi-slide
images.
Early
Printing Museum
Located in an area where breeze blows from the surrounding verdant
green forest, the museum features the history of printing culture
in Korea, the country which created and developed the world's first
metal printing type.
Geumsan
Ginseng Market & Ginseng Museum
Geumsan where the famous Goryeo ginseng was first grown is the nation's
largest ginseng market and distribution hub where 80% of the ginseng
produced nationwide is traded. Geumsan-eup houses four-story Ginseng
and Herb Exhibition Hall which features Ginseng Museum, local ginseng
products shop and ginseng sampling stall.

Science Festival
Mid-August at Expo Park, Daedeok Science Town, KAIST and National
Science Museum. Major events include exhibitions and hands-on
scientific experiences and experiments for students and visitors.

Geumsan
Ginseng Festival
Around August and September every year, across Geumsan-eup. Major
events include 55 ginseng dishes, health food section, Oriental
medical check-up (feeling the pulse for diagnosis) and theme tours
such as picking up-ginseng tour.
Hanbat
Cultural Festival
Between September and October every year, across Daejeon. It
features an eve festival, a cultural and art festival, a folk
festival, an academic festival and a science festival. |

Yuseong
Health Festival
Mid-September at the streets of Yuseong Hot Springs and Daedeok
Science Town. It features comprehensive health-related programs
such as programs on Yuseong Hot Springs, Daedeok Science Town and
organic agricultural products.

Daejeon's famous delicacies include seolleongtang (already explained
as one of representative foods of Seoul), samgyetang, a highly
nutritious ginseng-stuffed chicken stew known to boost physical
stamina. It is made by stuffing young chicken with ginseng,
garlic, jujube, glutinous rice and dolsotbab. Dolsotbab is a
glutinous rice cooked with more than 15 ingredients including
beans, chestnuts, gingko nuts, pine nuts, ginseng and served
with vegetable side dishes such as lettuce and parsley.
The dish is served in a heated stone pot to give its unique
taste. |
