In the late 19th century, as the Joseon Dynasty was nearing its end, the dynasty's long-held isolationist policy was replaced by one of open trade. Since then, Incheon has evolved into a prominent international port city. Incheon, with a population of 2.6 million in an area of 958km2, has emerged as a trade hub in Northeast Asia. Cargo ships from all around the world dock at Incheon port. Ferry services are also available here, linking Korea to neighboring Chinese cities including Tianjin, Shanghai and Weihai, and this has contributed to vigorous coastal exchanges between China and Korea.
Incheon International Airport which opened on March 29, 2001 is an advanced mega-scale international airport, serving 100 million passengers per year. It has emerged as a transportation hub in Northeast Asia, becoming a center of international logistics.

Tourist Attractions

Jeondeungsa (temple)
This is an ancient temple believed to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period 1,600 years ago. It is regarded as one of the 31 leading Buddhist temples in the country. Daeungjeon (main hall) decorated with beautiful sculptures, colorful paintings and patterns called Dancheong, as well as the uniquely-styled Beomjong (Buddhist temple bell) attract the attention of numerous tourists.

Incheon Dohobucheongsa and Incheon Hyanggyo:
Incheon Dohobucheongsa is a local magistrate's office during the Joseon Dynasty, while Hyanggyo is an old Confucian school. Designed to help people better understand traditional artifacts and learn institutions and systems of the Joseon Dynasty, the village has installed lifelike dolls inside the buildings to recreate the lifestyle of the Joseon Dynasty.

Hwadojin Park:
Originally built as a fortress to prepare for the opening of Incheon Port, Hwadojin was a venue where Korea signed the Amity and Trade Treaty with the United States, Britain and Germany in 1882. The exhibition hall constructed adjacent to the indoor well of the fortress exhibits a number of relics of the time, serving as a precious historical sanctuary of Incheon which has fewer historical exhibition halls..

Jayu (Freedom) Park:
This is the country's first Western-style park. In April, the park is ablaze with cherry blossoms. At the top of the park stands the Statue of General MacArthur who successfully led the famous Incheon Landing operation during the Korean War. The views from the summit, overlooking Incheon Harbor and Wolmido Island, are breathtaking.

Wolmido Street of Culture:
Entertainment facilities along the waterfront streets and art performances at an amphitheater offer great fun and excitement for visitors. The main street is packed with various cafes with chic and modern interiors, and outdoor restaurants serve gourmet dishes, especially fresh seafood, all of which offer scenic view of the sea. Ferry services and maritime cruises provide visitors an opportunity to admire the beauty of the neighboring islands and coastal areas, including Yeongjongdo Island.

Yeonan Harbor:
The area houses a ferry terminal offering ferry services linking Incheon's famous resort islands (i.e. Baeknyeongdo, Deokjeokdo and Mueuido) and large fish market where crabs, mussels, matsubara and sea bream freshly caught off the coast are sold at bargain prices. The resort is also famous for its seawater bathhouse.

China Town:
This town was first established when China's Qing Dynasty established a consulate in Incheon, following the opening of Jemulpo Port in 1883. It was once a flourishing commercial centers where silk, herbal medicines and celadons were traded between Korea and China. It is still popular for its excellent authentic Chinese cuisine offered at several Chinese restaurants in the town. Vigorous development work is underway as it has been designated as a special tourist zone.
