Seoul's metro subway system is safe and clean with signs in English and regarded as one of the most convenient modes of transportation. Since its opening in 1974, Seoul subway system has undergone a remarkable expansion and currently has eight subway lines measuring 287km in total distances, with 262 stations providing convenient connections to every direction in Seoul. Seoul's city bus network is also remarkable, with 8,500 buses running 400 different routes every five to ten minutes on a daily basis.

Tourist Attractions


 

 

Gyeongbokgung (palace)

Built in the fourth year of King Taejo's reign in 1395, Gyeongbokgung is the most representative palace of the Joseon Dynasty. The grandeur and imposing beauty of the palace is well represented by Geunjeongjeon, the main hall, Gyeongheoru, an impressive two-story pavilion where the king held a banquet for his subjects, and Jeongjeon, the king's office where he addressed national affairs.

Changdeokgung (palace)

Changdeokgung is one of the five most representative palaces of the Joseon Dynasty and the best preserved among the five. Its rear garden is laced with various types of pavilions and thousands of plants and trees, reflecting the characteristics of Korean traditional gardens which emphasize harmony with nature.

Jogyesa (temple)

Jogyesa is the headquarters of the Korean Buddhist Order Jogye, the largest Buddhist sect in Korea, and houses the Order's central administrative organizations. Buddhist shrines including Daeungjeon and Deokwangjeon, are beautifully blended with a 500-year-old pine tree and a 400-year-old pagoda tree in the vicinity.

Amsa Prehistoric Settlement Site

This site is the largest Neolithic habitation site ever found in Korea. It features the Prehistoric Lifestyle Exhibition Hall and "Dugout Huts" where visitors are allowed to get inside and take a glimpse of the lifestyle during the Neolithic Age.

Namsan (mountain) and vicinity

Namsan serves as a beautiful centerpiece and focal point of the city of Seoul. On its lower slopes features a lush botanical garden, public park and an octagonal pavilion, as well as the Architectural Museum and five traditional Korean houses designated as "Namsan Traditional Korean Village". On the summit Seoul Tower soars above the city, from where visitors can enjoy a three-dimensional view of Seoul in all directions or dine at a revolving restaurant.


Lotte World

Lotte World is an amusement park complex with unique indoor and outdoor entertainment facilities. It is composed of Lotte World Adventure, a gigantic indoor amusement park, Magic Island, an outdoor lakeside amusement park and Lotte World Folk Museum featuring miniature replicas of ancient palaces. There are also indoor sports facilities for skating, swimming and bowling.

National Folk Museum

The extensive museum features traditional artifacts, focusing on folk cultural artifacts of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It is devoted to the collection, research, and preservation of folk artifacts. The museum also serves as a forum for social education on folk culture as it hosts diverse exhibitions and classes.

Insa-dong

Insa-dong is the ideal place to relish Korean arts and craftsmanship. Large and small galleries, curio shops, traditional Korean paper shops, paper hangers shops, handicraft shops, ceramics shops and shops selling art-related items pack both sides of the streets and numerous side alleys. Along the street are various traditional restaurants and fascinating Korean teahouses.

Yeongsanje
Dano Day (the fifth day of the fifth lunar month) in Bongwonsa (temple). It offers an opportunity to experience Korea's unique Buddhist culture through various Buddhist ceremonies.

Gyeongdong Yakryeongsi (herb medicine market) festival
At herbal medicine shops in Gyeongdong on June 1. Major events include free Oriental medical examinations, Oriental medicine exhibitions and an oriental medicine-cutting contest.

Reenactment of Royal Wedding of Emperor Gojong and Empress Myeongseong
Every Saturday in April through October at Unhyeonggung (palace)
It features a bride selection and wedding ceremony of the royal family.

Changing of the Royal Guard Ceremony
Historic and traditional ceremony of the changing of the royal guards responsible for guarding palaces. On Tuesdays through Sundays between March 24 and December 31 at 14:00-15:30 at Deoksugung (palace) and Changdeokgung (In July and August, at 15:00- 16:30)


Nanta (Cookin)
Meaning "reckless punching", it integrates Korean traditional percussion tempos with a modern performance style, introducing Korean culture and taste to the world.
This No.1 non-verbal performance is set in a kitchen, the most common and familiar place in everyday life, making it so easy and enjoyable for the international audience who can easily relate to the performance, regardless of language and race.

Namdaemun Market

AS the capital of Korea and a major international city, Seoul boasts a wide variety of cuisines, ranging from royal court dishes and regional dishes from all the provinces to freshly-caught raw fish, as well as international gourmet and new fusion dishes.

Gimchi is the trademark Korean dish, which most perfectly represents Korean culinary culture. Gimchi is made by mixing salted vegetables such as radish, cabbages and cucumbers with various spices such as red pepper, garlic, spring onion, ginger and pickled seafood and then tightly sealing, fermenting and ripening them. During the lactobacillic fermentation process, substances with very healthful effects are produced.

Seollongtang is a hot, bland stock made by simmering beef bone and meat. It is served with rice, gimchi and other side dishes. Salt, green onion, and black pepper are added for more flavor.
