Ulsan is a beauteous port city situated in the southeast, bordered
by the sea to the east and by high mountains to the west. Since
the establishment of the first and largest industrial complex in
the 1960s, Ulsan has been the engine for Korea¡¯s economic growth,

Hyundai Heavy Industry Corporation
Ulsan Hyundai Heavy Industry Corporation, accounting for fifteen
percent of the world's shipbuilding capacity, is the world leader
in the shipbuilding industry. Besides shipbuilding, the company
is engaged in marine equipment for offshore oil and gas exploration,
production of various industrial equipment, and production of automated
equipment including ship engines and industrial robots
Stone Carvings of Cheonjeon-ri (National Treasure No. 147)
On the surface of the 9.7 meter-long, 2.7 meter-high spherical
stones are carved geometrical patterns, animals and 300 ideographs.
These engraved patterns record the ways the young people of the
Silla period trained their bodies and minds in nature traveling
mountains and rivers across the country.
Seoknamsa (temple) of Mt. Gajisan
It is believed that a Buddhist monk named Doeuiguksa built this
historic temple in about 824, during the Silla period. The 30-building
temple complex is a home to numerous precious cultural assets such
as a stupa containing the sarira of Ven. Doeuiguksa, a three-story
stone pagoda and a huge Seoksugo (granite water container). Currently,
the temple is often used as a venue for seminars for female Buddhist
monks.
Petroglyphs of Bangudae
On the coast of Ulsan, the edge of cliff is strewn with odd-shaped
rocks. This site is called Bangudae, which means hemisphere in Chinese
characters, as it resembles a turtle. On the rocks stretching over
a 99 square-meter area, carvings of various patterns of human figures
such as hunters and fishermen, as well as animals such as deer,
tigers, wild pigs and whales. The carvings depict distinctive features
of everyday lives of Korean ancestors who lived there from the mid-Neolithic
to the early Iron Age.

Cheoyong
Cultural Festival
Every October, throughout the city of Ulsan.
The Cheoyong Cultural Festival springs from an age-old legend
about an evil spirit that spread smallpox across the land. The
spirit only feared generous, kind-hearted Cheoyong (the legendary
son of the sea dragon king). During the festival, people stick
a picture of Cheoyong on their front doors as an amulet to drive
away evil spirits and bring good luck.
A wide variety of folk events, cultural and art performances
and a Cheoyong mask dance are featured. |

Eonyang/Bonggye Bulgogi (Korean beef stir-fry)
Visitors to Ulsan can experience the pleasure of tender, juicy beef
stir-fry called Bulgogi. The top-quality, fresh beef, grown in Eonyang
and Bonggye, is lightly marinated and then cooked on a grill over
a charcoal fire.
Raw Fish (sashimi)
The fresh raw fish caught off the east coast boasts unforgettable
texture and rich nutrition. In fact, some people visit Ulsan for
the sole purpose of tasting the sashimi offered in this coastal
city.
